TriMark United East More than Fifty Years of TriMark United EastShortly after the repeal of prohibition, a young man named Harry Halpern began selling paper goods to small bars and restaurants. When World War II came along, he worked hard to keep restaurants supplied with hard-to-find stainless steel products. After the war, responding to great demand, Halpern opened United Restaurant Equipment. Second GenerationBased in Woonsocket, RI, United Restaurant (which changed its name to United East in 1994) had two salespeople selling restaurant supplies and equipment from an 8,000 square foot warehouse. The business grew to nearly $5 million in sales and twelve employees, and by the early 1960s, the next generation was in place to continue the expansion. Bob Halpern, Harry's son, started at the bottom and worked his way up through deliveries, operations and to management. He earned a BA from Wharton, and modernized the firm's business practices. It didn't take long for the firm to more than double its sales, and by 1982, a 32,000 square foot building was built in North Smithfield, RI. Computerization came soon after, and Halpern's staff prided themselves on staying at the cutting edge of technology. In 1994, the firm changed it's name to United East Foodservice Supply Co. expanding its market reach and nearly doubling the facility's warehouse square footage. Designing GrowthIn 1998, the groundwork was put in place for one of several major consolidations in the equipment and supplies industry with United East as the platform company. Marlinn in Chicago, Foodcraft in Winston Salem, Raygal and Robert Clark in Irvine, California followed over the next several years. And in 2000, along with the administrative offices of the parent, TriMark, TriMark United East moved into its new headquarters in South Attleboro, MA housing 122,000 square-feet of warehouse and 30,000 square feet of office space. Through the transformation, the customer has always remained top priority. TriMark United East's sales reps maintain their close relationships, consistently passing along the latest product improvements and operational suggestions based on their many years of industry experience. Since the formation of TriMark and move to its new facilities, the company had added several Computer Aided Design work stations as well as the talents of full-time interior and kitchen designers. New customer services like warranty plans on equipment and a full suite of financing options add extra value. A burgeoning national accounts department ramps up to captivate the growing movement into servicing the multi unit operator. Today United East employs more than 150 people and has annual revenues of over $60 million. Harry Halpern would be happy to know that the firm continues to develop customer relationships using the same approach he began building over eighty years ago.
